This afternoon session, delivered by Malcom Greenbaum will look at common VAT issues that arise for businesses and the correct analysis of them to enable practitioners to build confidence in advising on fundamental VAT problems without having to delegate the work to VAT consultants.

VAT rating of sales, input VAT recovery, cross-border VAT and some land and property issues will be discussed, illustrated by recent and leading case law.

Delegates are actively encouraged to ask questions to clarify any matters troubling them or their clients either during the session or afterwards.

Course topics include:

  • VAT rating of sales (and how to use the legislation to ensure the correct treatment)
  • Input VAT recovery and the common problems that arise than can lead to disallowance
  • Cross-border sales and purchases of goods, including the effect of Brexit
  • Cross-border sales and purchases of services – where does the supply take place, what VAT is chargeable (if any) and who accounts for it?
  • Common land and property transactions and their VAT ratings – starting by looking at the supplies that are zero-rated, reduced-rated, standard-rated and (by default) exempt, illustrated by recent and leading case law.
